Wholly satisfying, but the feels are not completely assembled
The original Avengers was a dream come true, one that was long gestated and anticipated. That feeling of awe was going to be hard to top no doubt, but Joss Whedon none the less tried to best himself. In many ways he succeeded, but the movie could not quite match that undefined feeling that the original did. The cast is as brilliant as ever, and the movie manages to not get lost in the many on screen heroes. With a few side stories in mind, each character gets enough screen time to flesh out their involvement in the group. If you are unfamiliar, Ultron is essentially Tony Starks "Frankenstein Monster". He is created to be a protector of the world, but his artificial intelligence creates a hateful being set on evolving past humanity and leaving them extinct. With that description in mind, I would have thought Ultron would have been more terrifying. Being a child of Stark though, he comes off as more of a sarcastic evil genius. It works, especially since James Spader (of The Blacklist fane) voices him wonderfully, but it just was not what I was expecting. The team faces distress, but ultimately work it out for the greater good. What this film does better than some other recent entries like Winter Soldier is give you something to fear. In Winter Soldier there was never a moment where I thought Captain America would lose, but there are plenty of moments in Age of Ultron where you thing Earth's mightiest are outnumbered and out gunned. For being main new characters, Scarlett Witch highly outshines the underutilized Quicksilver. He is good for a few laughs, but her potential is shown off much more. We also get a lot more screen time for Hawkeye, who spent the majority of the first hypnotized. This is his best moment of participation in the MCU and he really gets to show how much of an asset to the Avengers he is. Need I mention that the HULKBUSTER makes an appearance? Of course I do! It was probably the coolest moment of the movie, entertaining not only visually and action wise, but on a comedic level as well. What this film does indefinitely do better than the original is comedy. I expected a darker toned movie, but it had me laughing nearly as much as Guardians of the Galaxy. Whether it was Hulk based sexual innuendo or picking on Captain America, the laughs constantly delivered. There is no doubt that you should see this movie if you are a fan of the genre in the slightest. It delivers through and through, just not quite reaching the heights of the original. Its length and pacing were very well put together, and as usual the amazing cast is what makes it work so well. The Avengers Assemble in a great sequel that only adds to the already rich Marvel Cinematic Universe
