Do you occasionally get into heated arguments with your dearest friends? Are you lacking the skills to humiliate your colleagues? Or are you just tired of always being roasted without a viable comeback? If you answer yes to any of these question, then today is your lucky day! I present to you my friends, Oh…Sir! The Insult Simulator, the latest and greatest party game from the fine folks at Vile Monarch. This title puts you in the role of one of nine interlocutors on their journey to ridicule and insult everyone else to achieve their goals. No one is safe from your wrath as you go on a wild spree spewing everything from classic insults to udder ridiculousness.
The game mechanics present are quite simple and provide as easy to understand concept. You and one other compatriot face off in a one on one battle to the death using the weapon that hurts the most…Words! Both of you are presented with a shared slate of subjects and verbs to create the ultimate roast. At first, I wasn’t too keen of the idea of sharing the word pool with my opponent, but after playing the game for a while I started really enjoying this concept. It is invigorating to watch your fellow insulter create their sentence to only be undermined when you steal their precious word away from them. The game also provides each player with two words unknown to the other than can really make or break the insult. It could either be the word you most desperately need or can just screw you over by providing shear nothingness. I personally really liked this concept and the ability to reroll these words at the sip of your tea cup.
While the objective of the game is to diminish your opponent’s health bar down to zero, you cannot just go around shouting the coolest obscenity. You need to construct a sentence with heart, feeling, and a dash of the latest “Yo Mamma” joke, or else you are going to get slapped with a low attack rate. The add a bit of excitement into the game by providing combos and known weaknesses. Each character has a weakness that cause the insult to hit a little hard and of course causes agony and despair to the character for the rest of eternity. Then combos a standard concept where using the same subject in sequential insults. Like telling someone their mother is silly followed by some other expletive about their mother. The term “mother” will be worth double points, then triple and so on.
The graphics and soundtrack in this title are reminiscent of the 90s. While the game looks very good, the character and environment models are extremely blocky by design to provide a sort of pixelated view of the ordeal. To pair, the sound quality has a muffled aesthetic to add to the overall vibe. I feel that this art direction really brings the game together.
I personally really enjoyed playing Oh…Sir! The Insult Simulator and felt that it provided an amazing experience for the small nature of this title. Whether it was playing online with a couple of friends or putting my wits against the computer in a match of verbal fisticuffs, I caught myself actually laughing out loud at the audacity of some of the different combinations of insults. While playing against one of my friends, we would constantly make jokes about the craziness of each insult and thus made the game that much more enjoyable. I will honestly say, I laughed more while playing this game, then I have in a while. However, all this praise does come with a few downers. The biggest issue that I noticed while playing was the replayability and inevitable repetitiveness that comes from most party games on the market. There is an achievement in the game called ‘It Gets Boring After An Hour’, which is unlocked for playing 100 matches. This achievement has some truth in it, while playing 100 matches does seem like a grind from time to time, but you will definitely get more than an hour out of this spectacular title. I would say that this game would provide around two hours of fun even when you play single player against the A.I. Whether it is unlocking characters or just hearing the strange obscenities that the characters mutter and don’t get me started with the possibilities once you get a big group around.
In the end, Oh…Sir! The Insult Simulator will run you $3 USD and I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a little bit of humor in their life. The game is cheap, hilarious, and just an overall good time. *Note: A copy of this game was provided for the purpose of the review Final Score: 8.5/10
