With Sunset Overdrive going free for Games With Gold on April 16th, we decided to take a look back at one of the coolest original titles on the Xbox One.
To date, Sunset Overdrive is probably still my favorite Xbox One exclusive. Developed by Insomniac Games, SSOD hit shelves in October 2014, delighting players everywhere with its over the top action and comedy. Set in Sunset City, your created player must fight back a mutant apocalypse that has spread after FizzCo launched a new energy drink called Overcharge which infected all of it’s drinkers. With a variety of OD (Overcharge Drinkers) to fight off, the game was packed with things to do. From side missions to the campaigns narrative, SSOD is filled with hilarious characters, with yours truly being no exception. SSOD has some of the most fun customization for any games I have played in recent years and adds further to your character’s, well, character!
Breaking the fourth wall often adds to the hilarious set ups, and the game is rife with pop culture references. Like an awesome love child made by Tony Hawk and Deadpool, SSOD plays like nothing else. The traversal is amazing, as you can zip, jump, and grind your way across Sunset City. On top of that, the weapons arsenal is crazy awesome. Whether you are launching explosive teddy bears at robots or fireworks at OD, the gunplay is consistently a blast. During a good amount of months following the games release, Insomniac supported the game weekly via Sunset TV. This was a weekly update show that added challenges as well as covered the games stats. It was definitely a fun time, and should a sequel ever come about it would be great to see it return. After playing the game as well as it’s two DLC packs, it still remains one of my favorite titles to come about this generation. FINAL score: 9/10
